John Couch is considered by many as one of New Zealand's leading classical guitarists. As well as a solo artist, he is a member of the New Zealand Guitar Quartet and the director of the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School. 

Winner of the 2002 Australian International Guitar Competition, and the 2001 Gisborne International Music Competition for Orchestral Instruments. Prizewinner in the 2003 36th International Guitar Competition "Michele Pittaluga" (Italy), the 2004 Taiwan International Guitar Competition, and finalist in the Tokyo International Classical Guitar Competition.
